The new communications network at the Doñana Biological Reserve improves biodiversity monitoring, conservation and research.
The Doñana Biological Station, responsible for the Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure, ICTS, of the Doñana Biological Reserve, now has a new and advanced digital radio link communications network. The network upgrade, carried out by Codipro, expands the existing bandwidth capacity to provide optimal support for critical atmospheric, meteorological and water telemetry services, plant physiology and water stress monitoring, CO2 and methane flux monitoring and video surveillance, as well as making network access easier for field researchers working in the area.
Technology leaders are by our side, and we are by yours.
The challenge: an energy self-sufficient network inside the National Park
The new network infrastructure is energy self-sufficient and low-power, covering an area of more than 20,000 hectares within the National Park. Its deployment includes more than 50 wireless PTP, point-to-point, and PMP, point-to-multipoint, connections, as well as more than 30 WiFi 6 access points, a cutting-edge technology that guarantees outstanding performance in highly demanding environments.
- The new network exponentially increases the existing bandwidth capacity to provide optimal support for critical video surveillance and telemetry services, while also making network access easier for field researchers working in the area.

- One of the critical requirements of the project was the exhaustive control of the infrastructure and the network, both in terms of radio emission levels and the impact of the work carried out, ensuring that it did not affect the balance of the environment, its flora or its fauna in any way.
The solution: comprehensive renovation of 30 communications towers
The project included the comprehensive renovation of 30 communications towers, strengthening the existing infrastructure and preparing it for future expansions. The technological renovation was carried out with the strategic collaboration of Cambium Networks, whose technology made it possible to implement a robust and highly reliable infrastructure that meets the most demanding standards in terms of performance and security.
One of the critical requirements of the project was environmental respect and the exhaustive control of the infrastructure and the network, both in terms of radio emission levels and the impact of the work carried out, ensuring that it did not affect the balance of the environment, its flora or its fauna in any way.
The results: a municipal network ready to grow
Among the improvements provided by the new network is the centralised cloud-based management of the entire installation, including wireless links and access points, alert monitoring and updates, thanks to Cambium Networks’ cnMaestro solution.
In addition, the new network offers a much higher connection bandwidth than the previous one, making access to devices easier and improving camera viewing. It also provides much more reliable operation thanks to the latest-generation technology of the new infrastructures, with higher-quality towers and new, properly renewed cabling.
Doñana Biological Station
The Doñana Biological Station is a research centre that forms part of the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC, within the area of Natural Resources. Its main mission is to carry out top-level multidisciplinary research aimed at understanding, from an evolutionary perspective, how biodiversity is generated, how it is maintained and deteriorates, as well as the consequences of its loss and the possibilities for its conservation and restoration. As a result of these activities, it promotes the transfer of knowledge to society. The Institute has two field stations: the ICTS Doñana Biological Reserve, Doñana Natural Area, Almonte, Huelva, and the Roblehondo Field Station, located in the Natural Park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas.
