RACE and ENAIRE drive iConspicuity in Spain with Teltonika industrial connectivity together with Codipro
Electronic visibility has become a key factor in strengthening safety in general aviation: light aircraft, ultralights, gliders, paragliders and other light aircraft that share airspace and need to improve their “situational awareness”.
With this objective, the Royal Aero Club of Spain, RACE, with the support of the air navigation service provider ENAIRE, launched an ambitious plan: to deploy nearly 100 iConspicuity stations, ADS-B/ADS-L, across Spain, mainland and islands, to receive position signals transmitted by aircraft and consolidate them via the Internet into a tracking network.
In this project, Codipro participated alongside Teltonika by providing the element that makes large-scale deployment in remote locations viable: reliable industrial connectivity and remote management to keep the stations operational with minimal field intervention.
Technology leaders are by our side, and we are by yours.
The challenge: ensuring the network operated continuously and remained sustainable over time
-
Distributed deployment across the entire territory, with stations located at general aviation airports and also at elevated points to maximise coverage.
-
Locations with limited access, where any on-site intervention involves time, cost and logistical complexity.
-
Irregular mobile coverage in certain areas, which could compromise connectivity and, therefore, data availability.
-
The need to operate reliably 24/7: if a station stops reporting, coverage and the operational value of the network are lost.
-
Evolution of the approach: the project began with Raspberry Pi-based units, but the deployment required a more robust and “industrialisable” foundation.
The solution: Ceragon's IP-50EX, the optimal choice
To professionalise the infrastructure and ensure stable operation, the project evolved towards industrial receiving stations and an industrial Teltonika cellular connectivity layer, supplied and dimensioned with Codipro’s support.
The implemented scheme was based on:
-
More robust Avionix OpenAir multitrack stations, ADS-B/ADS-L, suitable for continuous operation.
-
Teltonika industrial routers, RUT240, RUT200 and RUTX50, as the connectivity standard, selected for their reliability and for two decisive capabilities in this use case:
-
Remote management to monitor the status of the equipment and take action without travelling.
-
Input/output, I/O, functionality to switch stations on/off or restart them remotely, something critical when physical access is complex.
-
- External LTE antennas in locations with low GSM/LTE coverage, improving reception and stabilising the data link when required by the environment.
-
Integration of the stations into the Open Glider Network, OGN, ecosystem, unifying the network and facilitating signal aggregation.
Thanks to this approach, connectivity stopped being a weak point and became an enabler of the deployment: each new station could be launched with guarantees and, above all, maintained remotely.
The results: turning the iConspicuity network into a stable, scalable and easy-to-maintain infrastructure
Deployment already well advanced: more than 70 stations installed and operational, with the aim of exceeding 100 within the planned timeframe.
Greater network availability and reliability by adopting a Teltonika industrial connectivity standard, prepared for demanding environments.
A truly maintainable network: remote management and the ability to restart or activate equipment through I/O have significantly reduced the need for on-site interventions, especially in hard-to-access locations.
Improved performance in challenging areas: the use of external LTE antennas has made it possible to maintain connectivity where coverage was limited, avoiding outages and improving service continuity.
Greater operational and safety value: a more stable network increases the usefulness of iConspicuity for general aviation, reinforcing electronic visibility and situational awareness.
